Kaizen

Kaizen is a Japanese term made up of Two Words.

Kai - Zen

Kai Means Change
Zen Means Good

Kaizen - Change for Good(Better)

Most of the times when we use word "Kaizen" in industry,people who listen to us gets hesitate. As "Kaizen" is still not that much familiar to all. Also people thinks that "Kaizen" might be something new to them or it might be something difficult or complicated thing.So Here we will see basics of Kaizens.

As we have seen above Kaizen is Japanese term made up of two word Kai and Zen.
Kai means Change and Zen means Good. So We called Kaizen as a Change for Good or Better.

Definition of Kaizen:-


Any Change made in Machine,Material and Method which leads to improvement in respective Key Performance Indicator can be treated as a Kaizen. 

Kaizen is a tool thru which we can achieve Business Excellence. No Company/ Industry can achieve Business Goal without doing Kaizen. It is an integral part of Business Excellence.

Anyone in hierarchy of any company can make a changes for improvement of their Key Performance Indicator. So we can say anyone can do a Kaizen. Kaizen can be called as a Continuous Improvement,Small Improvement and Change for Better.

We can classify Kaizen as Follows.


1) Restorative Kaizen :- Restorative Kaizen is an improvement done for the restoration of Machine or Process. Many times the earlier machine/process becomes so deteriorated  that we have to make changes to meet the basic requirement of machine/process function. Such improvement is called as a Restorative Kaizen.

2) Renovative Kaizen:- Renovative Kaizen is an improvement done for better changes in Machine / Process. Some times our machines /process does not meet the current requirement so we need to improve it to meet current requirement. Such improvement called renovative Kaizen.

3) Innovative Kaizen :- Innovative Kaizen is an improvement which very unique or entirely different way of doing work. Most of the time technological changes in current way of doing work is called as a innovative Kaizen.

Kaizen can also be distinguished by two way

1) Reversible Kaizen :- Such improvement could be reverse if left as it is. So we need to do checks for its sustenance. Most of the Kaizens are reversible Kaizens, it needs more stringent sustainable actions like checks thru machine's check sheet by operator and Preventative maintenance by maintenance person.

1) Irreversible Kaizen :- Such improvement could not be reverse. So only few sustainable actions required to sustain it by maintenance person.

Steps of Kaizen Implementation

1) Problem definition based on prioritization.
2) Identification failure Mode.
3) Root cause Analysis.
4) Defining Idea against Root Cause.
5) Implementation of Idea.
6) Checking Result after implementation of Idea.
7) Implementation of sustainable action to maintain result.
8) Implementation of Same idea on other Location.
9) Checking returns on investment if any.
